Abstract

The problem of this thesis was to investigate the applicability of an examination of ritual in Eugene Ionesco's The Lesson to the development of a production approach. The script was analyzed according to two primary directing texts, as well as Aristotle's Poetics. Then each character's ritual was examined. After the directing process, the production was re-examined according to the original analysis. The rehearsal process was explained, using examples of various techniques employed to enhance the ritualistic and dramatic aspects of the production. The pre-rehearsal and rehearsal processes were also documented in a journal. Appendixes show technical choices and prompt script excerpts.
