Abstract

This case study investigated one individual's experiences with the GED and how it has been affected by his (a) self-perception on learning, both formal and informal and (b) past histories in education, lifelong learning, employment, and family background. Data were gathered through a series of interviews with the participant in fall 2000. Analyzed data revealed evidence that his self-perceptions and histories played significant roles in his attempts to study and pass the GED. The data analysis supports the need of Adult Basic Education programs to design education programs that will reach out and attract individuals such as George and retain them until they have successfully achieved their academic goals.
