Abstract

The label "technical" may place limitations in some minds about who technical writers are and the scope of their training and expertise. The educational preparation of technical writers, though, expands those initial limitations with the inclusion of such communication fundamentals as rhetorical structure and audience analysis. In this thesis I demonstrate that technical writers possess the knowledge and skill to work in a variety of corporate communication environments, such as the health-care industry. The following survey and audience analysis of Cox Health Systems of Springfield, Missouri, is the sole work of a technical writer, and reflects the diverse and expansive education technical writers receive.
