Abstract
This study explores the fiction of O.E. Rölvaag and Willa Cather, using an ecocritical examination to show the relationship between humankind and the prairie environment in which they live. By analyzing a combination of literature and environmental case studies, this thesis presents a picture of the ongoing changes of prairie myths, metaphors, and symbols and reinforces that humankind continues to seek Eden, although this new concept of Eden adapts to humankind's impact on the environment.
