Abstract

The purpose of this study is to trace the directorial process of producing John Patrick Shanley's Italian American Reconciliation and apply the theories of William Ball in his book A Sense of Dirction to the rehearsal process. Sponsored by the Baird Student Theater Fund, Springfiled Little Theatre, and the Southwest Missouri State University Theatre and Dance Department, the play was produced as a practical, creative thesis. The thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One covers the methodology of the thesis. Biographical information on the author is included in Chapter Two. Chapter Three details the process of script analysis. Information on the technical elements of production is contained in Chapter Four. Chapter Five provides source material on the directing process, including a personal journal. Chapter Six covers post-production analysis.
