Abstract
Canticles: 5 Songs for Chorus and Orchestra is a multi-movement work composed for a large SATB chorus and full symphonic orchestra. Comprised of texts taken from the biblical books of Psalms and Revelation, this work is intended to be performed in a church setting. Each song has a specific theme, and the music attempts to capture each topic by using certain musical devices and various orchestration techniques. From the lively, yet powerful opening strain of Praise the Lord, to the intimate setting of Psalm 23, each song harbors its own identity, while maintaining a sense of overall unity with the other songs. Musical motifs that are used throughout the opening four pieces are unified together by their subtle restatements in the closing powerful song.
