Abstract

The effects of electron withdrawing and electron donating groups on the electrochemiluminescent (ECL) properties of tris(2,2'-bipyridy) ruthemium(II) (Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ where bpy = 2,2'-pyridine) is reported. The electrochemistry of Ir(ppy)₃ (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine) and Os(phen)₂(dppene)²⁺ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline and dppene = bis(diphenylphoshinoethane) is reported in mixed CH₃CN:H₂O (50:50 v/v) and aqueous (0.1M KH₂PO₄) solutions with tri-n-propylamine (TPA) as an oxidative-reductive coreactant. The electrochemistry, photophysics, and ECL of (bpy)₂Ru(AZA-bpy)²⁺ (AZA-bpy = 4-(N-aza-18-crown-6-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine) in the presence of Pb²⁺, Hg²⁺, CU²⁺, and Ag⁺ are reported. Increases in ECL efficiency greater than 2-fold have been observed that depend on both the concentration and nature of the metal ion. The electron withdrawing and electron donating groups did not have much effect on the ECL properties of Ru(bpy)₃²⁺. Ir(ppy)₃ gave a green luminescence at 507nm with a low efficiency (0.00092 in aqueous solvent). The Os(phen)₂(dppene)²⁺ system gave an orange-red luminescence with an ECL efficiency of 2.0 (Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ is used as a standard of 1.0).
