Abstract
Political division and self-censorship in the United States have risen considerably in recent years. One means of countering such divides and siloed dialogue is through civil discourse that exposes people to diverse viewpoints. In an effort to bridge partisan divides, the Braver Angels Organization developed a debate format centered on these principles. Virginia Military Institute is one college campus that has adopted such debates as a form of civic engagement. In this paper we describe the development of the VMI College Debates and Discourse Program which has become a leading community of practice in civil discourse and engagement across college campuses, elaborating on the program’s initiatives, approach, and objectives. The paper also provides an overview of the Braver Angels debate structure and how such debates promote open dialogue. The paper concludes with qualitative and quantitative evidence for the program’s effectiveness as well as advice for those interested in pursuing similar programs at their home institutions.
