Abstract
Designing a set for Springfield Little Theatre's production of The Hobbit involved two stages. The first stage was the research and analysis of the playscript and of the novel, The Hobbit, from which the playscript was derived. The second stage was the design process. This process consisted of making certain artistic decisions based on the research of the playscript and related material, the needs of the playscript, and the creative instincts of the designer. In the evaluation of both the director and the designer, the set was successful in terms of usability by the actors and consistency with the desired production style.
