Title
Screening and intervention in elder abuse
Abstract
The incidence of abuse is highest in the elderly population and will become even more prevalent as a record number of Baby Boomers reach age 65 in the year 2010. Home care providers are in a key position to recognize and intervene in cases of abuse because of their frequent contact with elders and their families in the home, where most abuse occurs. This article presents a framework for screening and intervention that can be used by home health providers to recognize actual and potential abuse. Emphasis is placed on determining the profile in abuse. Interventions for actual and potential victims of abuse and the abuser are suggested.
