Understanding and using the dietary guidelines for Americans

Abstract

The DGA is a research-based resource that can serve as a helpful reference on nutrition for health and fitness professionals. The DGA focuses on making substitutions within eating patterns in order to pursue an overall more healthy diet. Rather than being prescriptive, the DGA provides Guidelines and Key Recommendations that can then be applied in light of individual preferences and traditions. Many resources are available to help health and fitness professionals promote healthy eating patterns when working with patients and clients.
