Abstract
The article examines the relationship of Freeman Barrows to slavery as his political transformation shifted to endorsing the principle of popular sovereignty in 19th century Missouri. Topics discussed include the trip of Presbyterian minister William F. Vaill through Missouri, social status within the slaveholding community of the Missouri frontier, speculations on how he came into possession of one young slave woman in 1850.
