Virtuous connections along Russell’s route
Abstract
J.S. Russell has devoted a substantial portion of his important scholarship to examining the central virtues in sport: exhibiting the character of the individual virtues, their place in sport and their connections to each other. In effect, he has created a map of the field, marking for us the places where the valuable may be found along the way. This paper takes an aerial view of the map in an effort to see the entire route. A larger portion of the paper offers a review of five of Russell’s articles, with special attention given to the virtues and values he identifies in sport and how they may be connected. The final section suggests answers to a couple of questions Russell raises along the way and raises a question for future consideration.
