Sense of Belonging of Latinx College Students in a Predominantly White Institution (PWI)
Abstract
Latinx students at predominantly White institutions face challenges affecting belonging and academic success. This mixed-methods study examines 68 survey responses and 18 interviews from Latinx students at a midwestern university, using Hurtado et al.’s framework and CECE Model. Findings reveal disparities in peer support, faculty interactions, and campus climate perceptions. Students experience cultural isolation, microaggressions, and systemic barriers despite engaging in student organizations and receiving mentorship. With universities eliminating DEI initiatives, the study emphasizes the need for alternative strategies. Recommendations include expanding financial aid, recruiting Latinx faculty, and implementing culturally affirming support programs to promote structural change beyond symbolic inclusion.
