Implementing CW-FIT in an Elementary Resource Room for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Other Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
Abstract
Increasingly, teachers report an increased focus on behavior management strategies in the classroom rather than on academic instruction. Given that many challenging behaviors are associated with those who are identified with a diagnosis of ASD or EBD, it is crucial that teachers are aware of how to appropriately interact and include these students in the classroom. It is important for teachers to have effective, research-based behavior management strategies that work for students with varying behavioral difficulties and academic needs to decrease problematic behaviors within the classroom. Class-wide Function-Related Intervention Teams (CW-FIT), a classroom management system developed to help manage and address problem behaviors within the classroom, was implemented for 12 weeks in a resource classroom to increase on-task behavior for three target students, and instructor behavior-specific praise statements. Results indicated CW-FIT had a positive effect on the overall classroom environment, strengthened on-task behaviors of all three target students, and provided an increase in behavior-specific praise statements offered by the teacher.
