Revivals and Revolutions (1770s–1810s)
Abstract
This chapter highlights key moments and figures in the history of evangelical Christianity in America and its broader Atlantic world context from the 1770s–1810s by exploring different historiographical interpretations, debates, and revisions. It focuses in particular on the role of evangelical Christianity in the American Revolution, the revivalism and expansion of denominations in the early American Republic, and both the initial growth and eventual diminishment of opportunities for women and Black participants. It ends, finally, by discussing the significance of the study of evangelical Christianity in this historical period and considering whether a throughline, if there is one, to our present can perhaps be found in the rise of international missions and American imperial ambitions.
