Interdepartmental Collaboration Model: A Support Strategy to Retain International Faculty in Counselor Education and Supervision
Abstract
The slow emergence of research scholarship on the experiences of international faculty members in counseling and counselor education programs and the increase in efforts to make the higher education space more globally diverse and equitable resulted in the development of this study. Based on a larger qualitative grounded theory study (Corbin & Strauss, 2015), this manuscript showcases an interdepartmental collaboration strategy, constructed from the transitional processes of six international counselor educators. The paper specifically focuses on the grassroots-level collaboration of four entities—domestic faculty, department chairs/heads, offices of multiculturalism/diversity, and international programs offices—that play a key role in the recruitment and retention of international faculty members in counseling and counselor education and supervision (CCES). Additionally, implications of implementing the interdepartmental collaboration model and future directions for research and scholarship have been discussed.
