Colonialism, Coloniality, and Colonial Rule in Africa
Abstract
Using primary source documents of explorers, missionaries, colonialists, and extant literature, this chapter examines the underlying factors behind European colonial conquest of Africa, nature and structure of the different colonial systems imposed, and the impacts of colonial rule and coloniality on Africa. As the chapter concludes, the living legacies of colonialism include self-opposition that now shapes relation between Africa and the European ‘other’ that continues to impose boundaries on knowledge and practices, culture, and relationship about Africa on Africans.
