Abstract
Manifold is a collection of short fiction with a critical introduction explaining the seven pieces in further detail. The critical introduction also explains my reasons for writing short stories. Manifold is an attempt to understand deeply the structure of the short story. I extensively studied flash fction or short short fiction. Manifold explores plot, but focuses more on characterization. Setting is also explored. Only two of the stories take place in the Ozarks. I wanted to be able to create different settings and to have the reader's confidence. The rest of the stories' settings vary from Florida to the Sudan.
