Abstract
Speaking Holler Creek is a collection of short stories written while teaching English for a community college near my hometown. I moved home in December, after six years of being away. What began as a way to remember all the hilarious and sometimes unbelievable events that took place while living at home, soon turned into my graduate thesis. I wanted to create a work that is not only amusing, but one that provides a glimpse into the life of those of us living in southern Missouri. Speaking Holler Creek is the fulfillment of the goal. The pieces are somewhat chronological. They begin with my first day as an English teacher, and end six months later with the loss of that position. All of the names have been changed to protect certain parties, and although this work is one of fiction, it started out like so many first collections--as memoir of true events.
