Abstract
This study compares the American and Japanese comic performances with a particular emphasis on situation comedy. The study uses Victor Turner's social drama approach as the method of investigation. As redress to each society, comic performances are analyzed in terms of the seven axes: festive, scatological, waggerish, violent, witty, satiric, and sympathetic. The study concludes that the proportion of the above seven axes, as they appear relevant in each culture, makes differnces in American and Japanese comic performances.
