Abstract
The purpose of this master's thesis is to present a rationale and plan for creating an introductory-level technical writing course that is offered to students completely online through a community college. In the fall of 1999, I was requested to develop an online course for English 203 Technical Report Writing for Crowder College, a two-year community college in Neosho, Missouri. Conceptual and empirical research form the basis of the course. Findings reveal both advantages and disadvantages of such courses, with the final analysis indicatin that distance education is a viable alternative if carefully planned and executed. The results of this research can benefit academicians teaching onlin technical writing. In addition, the research can give insight into the nature of beginning technical writing courses as well as online distance education issues in general.
