Abstract
Fantasy Variations is a ten-minute work for solo piano and orchestra. The title hints at the form used to construct the piece and also the inspirations behind its composition. The formal structure is based on the "developing variations" idea, perfected by Gustav Mahler. Like Mahler's use of this idea, Fantasy Variations makes use of a single idea to generate the material for the entire piece. Camille Saint-Saens' African Fantasy was the inspiration for writing a piece for solo piano and orchestra that did not conform to the expectations of concerto form.
