Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to analyze three music text series, Holt, Rinehart, Winston, Macmillan, and Silver Burdett/Ginn, using the concepts of melody and rhythm as a basis of criteria. The number of rhythmic activities, including chants and movements, and the number or opportunities for instrument playing, was recorded to determine whether or not experience preceded symbolization of the musical concepts. It was found that each of the three series presented an adequate amount of material to teach the musical concepts of melody and rhythm, although the texts placed varying degrees of importance on each concept.
