Abstract
The purpose of this study was to create an alternative method of presenting music history at the high school level. The study was designed to provide music educators with a method of presenting music history as it relates to elements outside of music with the purpose of helping students gain a better understanding of the culture and related events surrounding a period of art music. The suggested lesson plans are intended to open the musical arena to include non-musical elements in order to deepen student comprehension of music history. The study was designed to help teachers build a general music curriculum in which music is presented within a historical and cultural framework. Included is a set of goals containing unit objectives and learning activities for teachers and students as well as two teaching units based on the goals.
