Abstract

From the perspective of modern scholarship, Thomas D'Urfey is considered a minor Restoration dramatist, but his prolific career yielded at least thirty plays and several musical scores between 1676 and 1709. All of D'Urfey's plays contain music, and his efforts promulgated the genre of musical comedy. The Comical History of Don Quixote (1694), D'Urfey's most successful work, was the first theatrical adaptation of Cervantes' novel. This thesis establishes a critical edition of D'Urfey's text.
