Abstract

This thesis attempts to provide an informed perspective toward understanding past and current political, economic and military relations between the former Soviet Union and Japan. By studying recent and contemporary relations between the two countries, with particular attention to the Kurile Islands dispute, patterns and trends are established that may provide insight on future relations between Japan and the former Soviet Union.
