Abstract

This thesis is an examination of possible military applications of several new fields of scientific and technological development. It is neither a comprehensive assessment nor a compendium of specific future weapons systems; rather, it is an exploration of certain new and future technologies in terms of their potential national security implications. The areas of investigation include photonics, data security, access to space, and strategic defenses and space weaponry. Scientific investigation and technological developments are, by nature, very fluid; concrete advances are difficult to foresee clearly. This assessment is based upon strategic experience and current perspectives. On this basis the thesis suggests both near-term and long-term military applications.
