Abstract
When the Israelites conquered Palestine, they were confronted by several, nations which occupied the promised land. These nations appear mainly in twenty-seven lists varying in length and order. In this study each one of these nations is dealt wtih in a separate chapter. The problem consists of correlating the Biblical material with the available extra-Biblical evidence to determine what can be known about these nations. The conclusions drawn were that, although a few of these nations cannot yet be identified with certainty, the majority reflect a genuine experience of the conquering Israelities. The lists are not inventions of later editors but refer to the pre-Israelite population of Palestine and therefore have historical significance for an understanding of the Late Bronze Age in Palestine.
