Title
The Pastoral Ideal in Martial, Book 10
Abstract
Martial's twelve numbered book collections have largely defied scholars' attempts to find thematic unity in them. The sheer number of poems in a book-each book contains approximately one hundred-and their great diversity seem to have made any comprehensive thematic unity impractical. Yet the most recent scholarship on Martial's book collections suggests otherwise. I argue in this essay that book IO has a thematic unity that is based about a main cycle of twenty-five poems-with I 0.47 at its center-wherein Martial presents a pastoral ideal. So many other poems relate to this main thematic cycle that the entire book collection takes on a thematic unity.
