Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine middle school band directors' strategies for implementing comprehensive jazz education for students in southwestern Missouri. The collection of data was accomplished by use of a questionnaire designed by the researcher, and by focus group discussion, which included seven experienced middle school band directors. Strategies for improvisation, style, interpretation, and grade-appropriate literature were addressed during the study. Prior published research coupled with analysis of current study data were used to construct yearly objectives for middle school jazz ensemble. Theses findings supported middle school jazz students to develop and perform major and blues scales, improvisation, swing style, syncopation, appropriate jazz articulations, and various jazz styles.
