Abstract
This project is aimed at a synthesis of prior knowledge and experience in the orchestral tradition and its use in the first two symphonies written before starting the course of study with an understanding of the techniques, limitations, and conventions of wind band composition during study at Missouri State University. The following issues were addressed: factors that have historically played into the development of wind band music harmony as to separate it from other twentieth-century harmony, and what lies at the root of the origins of wind bands that fundamentally separates the musicians, composers, and conductors from orchestral musicians. Findings of the relationship in the band tradition to popular preference led to the incorporation of both Romantic musical ideas and modern harmonic theory and practice.
